Seven cutting-edge artists from Japan and around the world will come together for “Nocturne 1,” a program focused on unique, experimental sounds that push the boundaries of existing musical concepts and styles. Berlin-based Alva Noto pursues cutting-edge acoustic expression, dissolving the boundaries between sound and light to liberate the listener’s senses. The experimental rhythm ensemble goat, led by Koshiro Hino, manually reproduces programmed polyrhythms. The tension created by slight deviations creates a physical, ethnic groove. Late at night, Japanese alternative rock band GEZAN will unleash intense energy with a thunderous roar. Furthermore, Machina, a Korean artist based in Tokyo and Berlin, will transform the energy of the dance floor with her latest live set. Influenced by the rhythms of the South American Andes, Nicola Cruz uses electronic music to awaken the primal pulse that lies dormant deep within the body.

Daito Manabe will reprise the audiovisual performance that captivated audiences at this year’s Barcelona Sonar Festival. London-based electronic music producer and AV artist Halina Rice will present a special audiovisual set. Vienna-based MONOCOLOR will present “Sentient Ocean,” a unique world that exists somewhere between natural and synthetic, using sound and video generated in real time. Fellow Montreal-based Martyn Bootyspoon will be performing a unique audiovisual set.
