Overview “Solving the Mystery! Secret Treasure: Hokusai’s Amazing Wave Painting,” a remake of an NHK 8K program, will be screened in 8K at the ICC Theater. [Work Introduction] Perfume will attempt to solve the mystery of Katsushika Hokusai’s masterpiece, “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa.” This ukiyo-e has also been used in the design of passports and 1,000 yen bills. The original print, owned by the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum, has been transformed into an ultra-high-definition image exceeding 8K using the latest digital technology. Observing details rarely seen with the naked eye reveals Hokusai’s incredible skill one after another! And then there’s the “ultimate wave painting,” painted in his final years. This
ultra-high-resolution image reveals the astonishing passion Hokusai poured into his creations! (Filmed at the ICC Theater)

2. Background and Details NTT ArtTechnology is a subsidiary of ArtTechne Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Kubota NTT ArtTechnology is collaborating with NHK Educational Television (hereafter “ArtTechne”) to promote the “Digital x Hokusai” project, and five “Digital x Hokusai” exhibitions have been held at the ICC to date. NTT
ArtTechnology provided NHK Educational with high-definition digital data of Hokusai’s works, which were digitized using ArtTechne’s patented “Three-Dimensional Texture Image Processing (DTIP)” technology. This video work was produced using the data. The cast freely manipulates the high-definition digital data (over 8K) with a controller, beginning with an appreciation of the details of “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: The Great Wave Off Kanagawa” (owned by Yamanashi Prefectural Museum). They then attempt to solve the mystery of “Male Wave” and “Female Wave” (owned by the Kamimachi Neighborhood Association of Obuse Town, on loan to the Hokusai Museum), a ceiling painting by Hokusai that depicts the ultimate wave painting and was painted in his later years at the Kamimachi Festival in Obuse Town, Nagano Prefecture. The video was recorded at the ICC Theater. This will be the first time the “Mystery Solving! Secret Treasure” series has been filmed outside of NHK.
