Okinawa Shogaku won their first summer championship thanks to two powerful second-year players on the left and right, as well as their
impenetrable defense. This volume covers the team’s journey to capturing the championship flag, including the tactics of Coach Higa Kimiya, who led the team to victory at Koshien in the spring of 1999 as the ace left-handed pitcher and again in the spring of 2008 as the head coach. Our MVP is second-year left-handed pitcher Sueyoshi Ryosuke, who led the team to victory with an outstanding 1.06 ERA in six games, including two complete games. In addition to runner-up Nihon University Third High School, we also feature Gifu Prefectural Commercial High School’s Atsushi Yokoyama, who captivated high school baseball fans across Japan with his running, hitting, and fielding, despite being born with a missing finger on his left hand. This issue also features memorable heroes like Yokohama’s Shoki Oda, who pitched two shutouts, and Nihon University Third High’s Ryo Tanaka, who became the first team to hit two home runs in one tournament since the new bat standard was adopted. Plus, we’ve packed the fierce battles between the 49 participating schools with plenty of photo spreads. This issue also features a list of potential draft candidates for this fall, as well as the “Cool Eyes” of scouts, so don’t miss out on the coverage of players and teams who garnered attention despite losing in the regional tournament. Don’t miss our special feature and list of noteworthy first- and second-year players, which will give you a sneak peek into the fall season.
