The name comes from “UNIversity iDOL,” and it is a copy dance event based on the concept that “ordinary female university students take to the stage as ‘idols’ for one night only.” Since the first competition was held in 2012, it has continued to attract large audiences, and with the rise of idol culture as a tailwind, it has been expanding in size every year. It boasts an annual total of over 25,000 attendees, making it one of the largest student events in Japan. 64 teams from 58 universities across Japan participated in the preliminary rounds of this year’s tournament in five cities across the country (Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka). The final will feature 15 teams that have won the national preliminaries, as well as two teams that have won the losers’ bracket held on the same day. In addition, the main sponsor of this tournament is 17LIVE, Japan’s largest live streaming platform with over 50 million users worldwide. As part of a sponsored tie-up project, participants in the national qualifiers, finals, and losers’ bracket will be live-streaming, and a “special points system” will be established in which teams that complete the streaming missions will receive a uniform bonus of points.
