This year, we will be hosting the first cinema screening of artist Maiko Jinushi’s work, who has been attracting increasing attention both domestically and internationally for producing over 20 videos since 2010 and exhibiting them in museums and galleries. Under the title “On the Soft Time and Space Inside Your Head,” we will be screening all five of her works, including “Misheard” (2023), which was shown in her solo exhibition at the Mori Art Museum and garnered much attention. This will be an excellent opportunity to experience the unique world of Jinushi’s work, which she describes as a “new form of literary experience.” Comment from Maiko Jinushi I’m interested in how people, including myself, live. I have created works that attempt to give shape to fundamental yet elusive concepts such as “love,” “desire,” and “death,” as well as the various experiences we have in our daily lives, through dialogue with others and with myself. For the first time, I’m hosting a special screening at a cinema, and I’ve decided to screen five films made between 2016 and 2023 that are suitable for viewing at a leisurely pace and also serve as a self-introduction. Each work has a different style, but one thing I’ve been thinking about a lot, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, is the relationship between moving images and our bodies. For example, we regularly rotate our smartphones from portrait to landscape, spinning images around. This relationship between our body and image is different from the relationship we previously experienced when watching movies or television. Perhaps we are changing to perceive images more physically. Smartphones, cameras, and monitors have become like extended organs of our bodies, and, for better or worse, we absorb images through them in order to understand the world. Living in such an era, what exactly makes for realistic images? I’ve been thinking about these things while creating my works recently. Image
