It’s said that tens of thousands of profitable businesses suspend or close down every year. Is there a way to pass on the spirit of a carefully nurtured business to the next generation? Here, some people are transferring their businesses to third parties to keep them afloat and aim for further growth and development. We will introduce stories related to business succession, including the owner’s aspirations and the successor’s resolve, interspersed with studio talk. ■ Skills and aspirations passed on through business succession. A New Challenge for Young Successors A Fukuoka tempura restaurant located in a residential area away from the city center. The restaurant has been loved by locals for many years, renowned for its dishes packed with the owner’s unique attention to detail. However, the owner felt his physical strength was declining and decided to close the restaurant. His wife, who had run the store alongside him, wanted to somehow keep it going, but her husband stepped up to take over the business… ■Sabae glasses to the world! M&A aims to develop local industries with the same aspirations Sabae, Fukui, is known as the “city of glasses.” Kaneko Optical is a brand that represents Sabae, handling everything from eyeglass design to manufacturing and sales. This famous eyewear brand has teamed up to take on the world… Using M&A as a growth strategy, they’re taking Sabae’s glasses to the world! ■I want to start farming! An encounter brought about by the desire to make a dream come true A new farmer took over a farm in Tochigi and realized his dream. Now in his fourth year on the farming path, he continues to take on new challenges to expand his business, supported by many people. Business succession by a third party ensures that agriculture is passed on to the next generation. ≪Cast Comments≫ ■Kazuya Kojima (Unjash) It’s interesting to see how this time, we’ve seen business successions between completely different industries, as well as agricultural businesses being passed on to younger generations, allowing techniques and flavors to be passed on and further evolve. It’s exciting to see some completely different patterns of business succession than we’ve seen before, so be sure to check it out. ■Nao Asahi This is the first agricultural business succession story on this program. The business will be passed on through third-party succession. This time around, I learned once again that even if it’s not through family, it can be achieved if there’s a strong desire to pass it on. ■Nobuto Ito (Director, Nikkei BP Consulting) The hot summer is over and autumn has arrived according to the calendar. Many people dream of becoming farmers, but considering the harsh weather conditions and the difficulty of the work, not many people actually enter agriculture through business succession from other industries. This time, the program features a woman who has taken on the challenge of growing pears and peaches after working at a fitness club. It’s no easy task, but her cheerful and refreshing attitude makes you want to support her. ≪Staff Comments≫ ■Program Producer: Masahiro Yoshihara (TV Tokyo Production Department) From Sabae! We took a close look at an M&A transaction aimed at protecting “Japanese manufacturing” in the region. We can sense the strength of the region in its commitment to “manufacturing” and its willingness to compete globally.
