The shrine was founded extremely long ago, and although its origins are unknown, there are records of the shrine buildings being rebuilt as early as 1,300 years ago in the 6th year of the Hakuho era, making it one of the oldest shrines in Japan.

And at the very back of the shrine is the Okumiya, the place where Kifune Shrine was founded, a sacred place surrounded by forest. The yellow boat carrying Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto, according to legend, was reportedly encased in stones to hide it from view. It still lies, covered in moss, beside the main hall of the Okumiya. Directly below the main hall is a large hole known as the “dragon’s hole,” above which the shrine was built. Dragon holes are considered sacred and should not be seen by the public, so no one is allowed to see them. The dragon hole at Kifune Shrine is considered one of Japan’s three great dragon holes.

Live music performances that are nature-centered rather than human-centered create an immersive and mystical experience, featuring natural sounds such as birds and insects, wind, and rain. Nature is filled with many sounds, and these sounds work in harmony to form an ecosystem. Humans participate as part of this ecosystem. Therefore, rather than playing a set number of songs, the performers will create ambient sounds, surrendering themselves to the fluctuations of nature. Sometimes these will become accidental melodies, weaving together a beautiful harmony of “nature and humans.” At other times, there will be no performance at all, and a moment will be spent simply listening to the sounds of nature. AMBIENT in Nature(TM)︎ is not just a music event, but aims to provide a time and space where people can experience the beauty of nature. If we can focus on the element of “sound” as one clue to reconnecting with this, and if it can provide a new perspective on nature or a place of healing for modern people tired of sociality and meaning, there would be no greater joy. While “Hogaku 1.0” was performed exclusively with traditional Japanese instruments, “Hogaku 2.0” defines Hogaku as music performed using Western instruments and electronics. It applies the breathing, scales, and rhythms found in traditional Japanese music, such as gagaku, koto, and folk songs, to create a new Japanese sound. It is led by Japanese guitarist Yukihiro Atsumi.
