Her strong love for her hometown led her to invite the staff to Ehime, hoping they would include it in “Fantasy Train.” On the first day of the two-day, one-night trip, she’ll enjoy a special run of the “Iyonada Monogatari.” In a carriage characterized by its retro-modern design, I had lunch next to Governor Nakamura Tokihiro. The New Year’s-style bento box was luxurious, made with an abundance of local ingredients. As we got off at a station along the way, I noticed a woman offering cookies to the passengers. Looking more closely, I realized it was Aunt Stella? Tomochika immediately added her usual teasing. From here on, Haruna joined us on the journey. They also visit Kaimei School, one of the oldest elementary schools in western Japan. Inside a classroom recreated from the Meiji era, Tomochika immediately performs an improvisational play. How will she fare with Haruna? On the first night, they stay at Yamatoya Honten, a
long-established inn in Dogo Onsen. Apparently, Tomochika used to work as a waitress here, and she still drops by whenever she returns home. The inn’s greatest feature is its Noh theater. Armed with Tengu masks and Japanese umbrellas, they perform another impromptu play together. The two were so passionate about their performance that they couldn’t back down… ■ Tomochika also tried it for the first time! What is Mitsuhamayaki? The next day, we went on a journey to discover hidden gourmet spots in Matsuyama City. Boarding the Iyotetsu suburban train, the first new car in 67 years, they head for Mitsuhama, a seaside town with a retro atmosphere. They pass through Japan’s only “train enthusiast spot” where streetcars and suburban trains intersect. With Reiji absent, how will the two girls react? As they sway on the train, Haruna reveals the travel style she dreams of. In Mitsuhama, they try the aptly named Mitsuhama-yaki! Tomochika is also excited about trying this dish for the first time, and jumps to unexpected conclusions. After parting ways with Haruna, Tomochika heads off to the final stretch of the trip, café-hopping by herself. At one café with an exterior inspired by a train from overseas, she reminisces about childhood visits with her parents. Then, at a stylish, open-air café overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, she sips a tropical drink to get into a tropical mood. This brings to mind the enka singer Tokunaga Yuki, a familiar face on the show who often gets criticized for her
train-photography trips. “Are you watching, Toku-chan?” Tomochika says, taking a photogenic shot as if to demonstrate her skills. Tomochika is enjoying a brief visit back home. Finally, she soothes her travel fatigue at a state-of-the-art public bathhouse that recreates the hot springs said to have been bathed by Prince Shotoku, incorporating contemporary art. While soaking in the bath, Tomochika sings Tokunaga’s signature song. But then she utters a shocking remark to Tokunaga on the other side of the screen…
