TV Tokyo will broadcast “Ikegami Akira x Yoshinaga Sayuri: 100 Years of Showa,” starring Akira Ikegami and Sayuri Yoshinaga, on Sunday, September 28th, from 6:30 PM. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Showa era, and the second installment of a special program will look back on the successes and failures Japan has experienced over the past 100 years, with the concept of “knowing the Showa era and connecting it to the future.” This time, we’ll explore keywords that connect us to the future, focusing on the Showa era, a time when Sayuri Yoshinaga played a major role, and also looking back on the life of Junko Tabei, the mountain climber Yoshinaga plays in her latest film, “You Are Over the Summit” (released October 31st, Kino Films). This program connects us to Japan’s next 100 years. Comments ■Akira Ikegami It was a blissful experience working with Sayuri Yoshinaga. No matter what work she appears in, she’s always been a very active and wonderful person, and I’ve always wondered what the secret to her “activism” is. She carefully considers and weaves each and every word she says. Through this program, I was glad to learn about a side of her I hadn’t known before, such as her thoughts on peace and rebellious spirit. There was a time in the past when phrases like “women da tera” were used. I hope that viewers of this program will understand that today’s society is what it is because so many women in the past, including mountaineer Tabei, have overcome difficult circumstances. ■Yoshinaga Sayuri This was my first time interviewing Mr. Ikegami on a television program, and I had an invaluable time with him. I usually see Ikegami-san on TV, and I was curious to know how she researches and speaks about her experiences, so I was excited to actually see her share her thoughts and knowledge while sitting next to me. I was also very happy that she took the time to watch one of my films, despite her busy schedule, and shared her thoughts with me. In “You Are Beyond the Summit,” I play Tabei Junko, the first woman in the world to successfully climb Mount Everest. This program unravels the life of Tabei Junko, as depicted in the film, through the lens of the year 100 of the Showa era. I never thought it would actually come true! Ikegami described his
collaboration with Yoshinaga as a “moment of bliss,” and the two-hour-plus recording session was a blissful one for all the staff involved in making this program. The Showa era was also a time of great change for women. It saw the first female Minister of State and female Chief Justice, and Junko Tabei, played by Sayuri Yoshinaga, became the first woman in the world to successfully climb Mount Everest. It was a time when women took many “first steps.” While there’s still a long way to go, I was reminded that the efforts of those of us living today will shape the next era. “Ikegami Akira x Yoshinaga Sayuri: 100 Years of Showa” isn’t just a look back at the Showa era; it’s a program that connects us to the future.
