She subsequently produced numerous hits, including the million-selling “Kinjirareta Koi” (Forbidden Love), “Nada Sou Sou,” “Sugarcane Field,” and “Anata ga Suki De.” Her crystal-clear voice and vocal ability made her one of Japan’s top singers in both name and reality. In 1998, she sang the theme song “Tomorrow, Children Will…” at the opening ceremony of the Nagano Winter Olympics, and the performance was broadcast worldwide. In 2002, she achieved a triple crown at the 44th Japan Record Awards, winning the Best Vocal Performance Award, the Gold Award (for “Sugarcane Field”), and the Lyrics Award (for “Namida Sou Sou”). In 2006, she won a Special Award at the 48th Japan Record Awards for “Namida Sou Sou.” In 2007, she received the 2006 Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art
Encouragement Prize and the 49th Mainichi Art Award. In 2008, she was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. She released the classical albums “Ryoko Classics” in 2013 and “Ryoko Classics II” in 2018, and her symphonic concerts with orchestras have been well-received around the world. In 2021, to celebrate her 55th anniversary, she will hold the “Ryoko Moriyama Concert Tour ~My Story~,” showcasing the world of paper cutting art and song through stage set design featuring works by paper cutting artist Ayumi Shibata. In October of the same year, she won the 11th Iwatani Tokiko Award. In April 2022, she played the role of Yasuko in her later years as Annie Hirakawa Yasuko in the NHK drama series “Come Come Everybody,” which garnered significant attention. In December 2024, she released the Japanese jazz album “Life Is Beautiful” (recorded in New York), produced by jazz pianist Senri Oe, who is active in New York. In April of this year, she will perform at the Osaka Expo, a United Nations-sponsored jazz event, which will be streamed worldwide. This will be her second appearance at the Expo, having also performed at the 1970 Osaka Expo, 55 years after her previous appearance. In addition to her singing career, she is also active in a wide range of fields, including her 10th year as a regular Monday personality on Nippon Broadcasting System’s (nationwide) “All Night Nippon MUSIC 10.”
