Yumeji Art Museum (Address: 2-1-32 Hama, Naka-ku, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, Director: Mitsunobu Kojima, Managed by: Ryobi Cultural Promotion Foundation | The Yumeji Birthplace Memorial Museum, housed in a renovated storehouse, features Yumeji’s autumn-themed works, such as the pillow folding screen “Netakane Nanka” (“Netaka Nanka”) (on display for the first time at the Yumeji Birthplace), which depicts a sleeping infant with an inscription based on an ancient lullaby. The museum also displays Takehisa Yumeji’s childhood room, which still features a window frame with his sister’s name inscribed on it. There’s also a special exhibition celebrating the Double Ninth Festival. At Shonen Sanso, works are exhibited on the themes of life, design, and music, introducing Yumeji as a person through photographs and personal effects. You can view Yumeji’s works as a designer, such as “Fujin Graph” and “Senoo Music Score ,” which features a rabbit inspired by autumn moon viewing, while listening to music from Senoo Music Score. Enjoy your stay at the Yumeji Birthplace Memorial Hall, a roughly 250-year-old thatched-roof building where Yumeji was born and lived until he was 16, and the Boys’ Villa, a restored studio and residence designed by Yumeji himself, where you can experience the origins of Yumeji’s art.

About the exhibited works “Netakananka” (mid-Taisho period) 41.3 x 135.2 cm *First time on display at the Yumeji Birthplace Memorial Museum This work is a low-profile folding screen called a “pillow folding screen,” which was placed next to a pillow to protect from the wind and cold. The girl depicted is sleeping blissfully on a soft futon and pillow, and you can almost hear her breathing. The caption reads, “I’m sleeping, I’ve taken a pillow, my pillow is floating, sleeping, floating.” However, a similar piece appears in Yumeji’s 1922 book, Cat’s Cradle and Cradle, a collection of traditional folk songs from around Japan, under the title “Pillow.”
