In recent years, the prices of musical instruments, including wind instruments, have continued to rise, making it increasingly difficult for not only musicians but also school and local brass bands to purchase instruments. In addition, as an increasing number of schools are abolishing their brass band clubs due to the “regional shift of club activities,” an increasing number of children are finding themselves unable to play musical instruments because there is no brass band in their area. As a result,
opportunities for young people to play musical instruments are being lost nationwide. • My siblings and I want to continue playing in the brass band, but they’re expensive so we can only buy one. • We borrowed instruments from members who had left the club, but now they need to be returned. • The school doesn’t have enough instruments to lend, so I don’t have one I can use. • The brass band club at the new school was disbanded, so I gave up on continuing. For various reasons, young people, in particular, are facing difficulties in playing musical instruments. An increasing number of children are finding it difficult to play musical instruments, even if they want to. As a result, NWJ, whose mission is to “protect a musical space where children can play instruments safely and foster a future for brass bands in which the community plays a central role,” launched “Gakki Renta” as a step toward solving this problem. Rental fees start from ¥1,500/month, making them affordable even for students! Our organization supports education and the community through wind bands, aiming to create a society in which everyone can have continuous contact with music, starting from the local community, so that children do not have to give up on their dreams due to a lack of instruments or a lack of an environment. Music is the cultural foundation of the local community and has a social role as a life force that cannot be measured in economic value. Therefore, to realize a “society where businesses and communities support music together,” we will work with local residents to establish the systems necessary for the transition of wind bands to local areas, including securing instructors, procuring instruments, securing venues, and providing financial support, and will support the continuation and development of the local musical instrument performance culture.
