This book is a wartime national history textbook for first- and second-year students in the higher education division of national schools. Although the first volume was published, it was likely unused due to the full-scale mobilization of students for labor, and the second volume was never even published. This book is a compilation of the two volumes, and is the first time that this literally “phantom textbook” has been released to the public after 76 years. This book is the last national history textbook from the era when Japan was truly “Japan,” and is permeated with the fundamental principle of a spiritual connection between the Age of the Gods and the present. It adopts the so-called Imperial view of history, and dates are written in the Imperial calendar. What sets this book apart from previous national history textbooks is that it was written at a time when defeat was clearly imminent. The book even mentions the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944, describing the success of the first organized kamikaze special attack units at that time as “a blow that crushed the arrogant enemy.” Another important point this book aims to convey to students is how our ancestors tried to overcome crises that threatened the very survival of the nation. As Japan faces a crisis of its own today, there is much we can learn from this book. The first and second years of the high school course are equivalent to the first and second years of junior high school today. Reading this book, one is struck by the high level of education at the time, while also realizing how much education has deteriorated since the war.
