Recorded at PARCO Theater, Tokyo on June 19, 2025 [Written by] Satoshi Suzuki [Director] Isao Yukisada [Cast] Kiichi Nakai, Kyoko Yoshine, Reon Yuzuki, Shiori Doi, Riko Fujitani, Shukichi Kubo, Reiko Matsunaga, Takashi Yamanaka, Keizo Nagashima, Keisuke Sakamoto, Ikuma Nagatomo, Koki Nagamura, Hina Yukawa, Takeshi Masu, Midoriko Kimura Film director Yukisada Isao depicts the Showa era film world through theatrical performance! Nakai Kiichi plays the role of the famous director known as “Sensei,” and this powerful pairing with Yukisada Isao returns for the first time in 10 years! The model for the “teacher” in the title “Teacher’s Back: The Visionary Memoirs of a Film Director” is… Japan’s proud master director, Yasujiro Ozu! Film director Isao Yukisada enthusiastically approached actor Kiichi Nakai to create this film, inspired by the life of master director Yasujiro Ozu. Set on a film studio, this fictional homage to Ozu’s work depicts a day in the life of a struggling master with plenty of humor and flavor. The five women surrounding the “teacher” played by Kiichi Nakai include Kyoko Yoshine, Reon Yuzuki, Shiori Doi, Riko Fujitani, and Midoriko Kimura. The role of “Sensei’s” scriptwriter partner is played by Masu Takeshi, along with a cast of talented actors. Additionally, the cast includes a diverse cast of actors, ranging from veterans to young talent, including Kubo Shukichi, Matsunaga Reiko, Yamanaka Takashi, Nagashima Keizo, Sakamoto Keisuke, Nagatomo Ikuma, Nagamura Koki, and Yukawa Hinara, who all share a rich and varied cast. The Nakai family and director Ozu were close like family, and Ozu was like a grandfather to them. Interweaving stories and memories passed down through the Nakai family, and layering them with feelings for the good old film industry of the time, the rich time that flowed there is spun onto the stage as a theatrical production in the “Ozu style.” [Synopsis] The 1950s. With the advent of television, the golden age of film was coming to an end. Shojiro Oda (Kiichi Nakai), a master of Japanese cinema known as “Sensei,” has begun filming his latest project, but things aren’t going well. Oda further delays filming after receiving news of his engagement from Sachiko (Yoshine Kyoko), the restaurant’s poster girl whom he dotes on like a daughter. Screenwriter Nozaki (Masu Takeshi) and renowned actress Tani Yoko (Yuki Reon) look worried. Oda behaves dapperly in front of everyone, but deep down he’s in turmoil. He’s getting old. His health is poor. This might be his last film. This fear brings out visions of the women he’s had connections with: former geisha Hanae (Kimura Midoriko), war widow Kazumi (Doi Shiori), and Ginza hostess Chiyo (Fujitani Riko). Before he knows it, Oda himself is drawn into his memories… This is what movies were like back then. This is what people were like back then. A wonderful message from the sophisticated adults of the Showa era to the modern era.
