https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDnWVFW2a9g Editor Masaaki Shiraishi launched the renowned “Opening Care” series in 2000 from specialist publisher Igaku Shoin, earning him a well-known presence in the publishing world. The “Opening Care” series now boasts over 50 books, including Shinichiro Kumagai’s “A Night of Rehabilitation,” which won the Shincho Document Award, and Koichiro Kokubun’s “The World of Middle Voice,” which won the Kobayashi Hideo Award and was recently included in the Shincho Bunko collection. After retiring from Igaku-Shoin, Shiraishi published “Care and Editing” (Iwanami Shoten) in April of this year, which has become a hot topic. Why did “Opening Care” begin? What is the “care” that forms the core of the series? What is the difference between “care” and “treatment”? Shiraishi says that what’s important is “affirming the status quo” rather than “self-improvement,” and “care” rather than “treatment.” What is the essence of this? We spoke to Shiraishi about the untold stories of this series, which has much to teach readers outside of the publishing industry. [Speaker Profile] Masaaki Shiraishi Born in Tokyo in 1958. A philosophical book for a new era seeking true freedom. Falling in love with someone. Is this active or passive? It’s not something you try to fall in love with, nor is it something you’re forced to fall in love with. Words that only recognize “doing it” yourself and “being done to you” cannot even describe such an ordinary, everyday occurrence. In order to explore the outside of this, the author focuses on the “middle voice,” which has quietly disappeared from history. This is a philosophical book that examines the limitations of human freedom and seeks true freedom. It also includes a groundbreaking new theory of responsibility.
