A beloved local festival that has been passed down for half a century! Free bus service will be available during the festival period!

Takehisa Yumeji is famous for his unique portraits of beautiful women. Every year in September, Takehisa Yumeji’s birthday month, an executive committee made up of local residents’ associations, shopping districts, and businesses holds the “Yumeji Festival” in his memory. On the day of the festival, the area bustles with activity, with floral tributes and events organized by local residents, in front of a monument inscribed with a verse from “Yoimachigusa” (Evening Grass), written by Yumeji Takehisa. Takehisa Yumeji’s connection to
Yahatahigashi Ward Takehisa Yumeji (1884-1934), a painter and poet representing the Taisho era (1912-1926), is said to have lived in Edamitsu, Yahatahigashi Ward, Kitakyushu City, for a time in his youth and worked as a draftsman at the Yahata Steel Works. He has ties to Yahatahigashi Ward. While known for his “Yumeji-style portraits of beautiful women,” he was also a multi-faceted creator, selling his own designs and accessories under the catchphrase “kawaii” (cute) in Japan about 100 years ago. He also illustrated magazines, designed book covers, and wrote fairy tales. In November 1978, a monument
commemorating the poem “Yoimachigusa” (Evening Grass), written by Yumeji, was erected in Suwa 1-chome Park. The monument bears the inscription, “The helplessness of evening grass.”
