This issue features a special theme: “Food Questions and Answers.” Contributions from a diverse range of writers have revealed a variety of perspectives, including communication through deliciousness, cultural choices and refinements, connections with ancestors, non-human life, and the natural world, social issues linked to business, and “food” as a tool for defining and protecting oneself. Eating is both a way of building relationships with others and a confrontation with oneself. How do we approach the process of eating? What do we think about, or do we not think about, when we eat? With whom do we share the flavor? While food is an act of survival, maintaining our bodies, it may also reflect how we live. Autumn is the season for appetite. What will you eat today? The magazine’s first editor-in-chief was Uchida Roan, a writer and literary critic, and its contributors included Tsubouchi Shoyo, Natsume Soseki, and Inoue Tetsujiro. Since its founding, the magazine has maintained its consistent editorial stance of
“contributing to Japanese culture at large and serving as a gateway for global cultural acceptance.” Looking ahead to an increasingly complex future, we aim to “shed light on the unknown and become a small beacon of knowledge that illuminates uncertain times.” X (formerly Twitter):
