The Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) mentions ginger, Japanese pepper, and garlic, and the Shosoin Repository houses pepper, cloves, and cinnamon, suggesting they were introduced to Japan during the Nara period. Commonly found on the dinner table are wasabi, mustard, shichimi pepper, and yuzu pepper, among other spices and herbs unique to Japan.
