He began taking photographs at the age of 16 and, after studying painting, launched his career as a photographer. He exhibited works using photographic techniques such as gelatin silver prints. In 1987, he exhibited his work at Torino Fotografia ’87 in Turin, Italy. In 1994, he established his reputation with an exhibition at Shapiro Gallery in San Francisco, USA, and expanded his activities to Europe and the United States. In 1996, he published the photo book “Empty Box” with Nazraeli Press in the United States. In 1998, he held a solo exhibition at the Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York. In 2006, he held his first solo exhibition in Europe at Galerie Camera Obscura in Paris, France. Since then, he has been actively exhibiting in Europe. In 2014, he published the photo book “Small Things in Silence” (Seigensha), a culmination of his 40-year career as an artist. Expanding his field of activity beyond Japan and the West, in 2018 he held “Yamamoto Masao. Photography” at the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow, Russia. Since 2018, he has produced the “BONSAI” series, exploring Japanese aesthetics. He currently lives and works in nature, based in the southern foothills of the

In 2008, he studied piano tuning under Tetsu Yoshida. While studying sound, he also tunes for jazz pianists both in Japan and abroad. In 2015, he studied keyboard instrument making under Masahiro Adachi. He began making clavichords (keyboard instruments), invented in the 14th century. In 2021, as part of the “FEEL KIYOMIZUDERA” project at Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera Temple, he created and donated a clavichord from retired stage boards from the main hall.
