This year, it will be held from September 18th to 21st. The player with the most wins in history is Masashi Ozaki, affectionately known as “Jumbo.” He became the first champion at the inaugural tournament in 1973, and went on to win a total of seven times, including his final victory at the 30th tournament in 2002. After 2000, players such as Nobuhito Sato, Keiichiro Fukahori, and Tomohiro Kondo emerged as the next generation of men’s golfers. Among them, Yuta Ikeda, winner of the 38th tournament in 2010, won his first tournament at Watatsu, a course beloved by his idol, Masashi Ozaki, and shed tears on the 18th hole. In the 43rd tournament in 2015, then-host pro Ryo Ishikawa won the tournament for the first time. The 48th tournament in 2022 saw a three-way battle between Yuta Ikeda, Ryo Ishikawa, and Tomoharu Otsuki. The fierce battle, which went all the way to a playoff, ended dramatically with Tomoharu Otsuki scoring an eagle. At last year’s 50th tournament, the then-26-year-old Akuryu Iwasaki won with a score of -20, matching Masashi Ozaki’s tournament record. It was a dramatic conclusion that combined history with a new era. The key to winning at Watatsu, the home of the ANA Open Golf Tournament, is the distinctive final three holes. No. 16: A short hole where reading the wind and club selection are important. No. 17: A long hole where the “trees over” shot is an attractive opportunity to aim for a two-on over the tall trees.
