※Excerpt from the exhibited works The ability to imagine the invisible The Japanese have created a unique culture by sensing the presence of gods and Buddhas in the mountains, rivers, plants, and trees, and by sensing the presence of the invisible. That rich imagination blossomed as sophisticated popular culture during the Edo period, bringing richness to people’s lives and shocking aesthetics around the world. However, in today’s world, technological innovation and globalization have placed an emphasis on “efficiency,” and it seems that the Japanese people are losing their creativity and the tolerance to accept and develop it. Kano Setsuo’s works, based on the concept of “impermanence,” are constantly changing. None of them have titles, and he conveys the message that viewers should use their own imagination to interact with the works. This exhibition, being held in Tokyo for the first time, invites you to experience the world of Kano Setsuo, who expressed Japanese aesthetics, which reached its peak during the Edo period, in every possible way, and experience up close the “power of the invisible” that Japan possesses. SETSUO KANO Profile of Setsuo Kano Based in Japan, he began his creative endeavors to convey the world and future of the concept of “impermanence,” a fundamental tenet of Japanese aesthetics. As a world-renowned collector of Edo paintings, he possesses the discerning eye for discerning
authenticity, as well as a keen aesthetic sense and aesthetic sensibility. He is a prolific artist, having produced over 1,300 works in his six years of experience. His works, painted without preliminary outlines using only water-based ink on sliding door-sized Japanese paper canvases, are unconstrained by established techniques and genres. He constantly challenges himself with new means of expression, creating works every day in short production periods. This exhibition will showcase unreleased and new works from his “MUJO Series,” “Ukiyo-e Series,” and “PINK Series,” as well as his previously unspoken philosophy of “impermanence,” presented for the first time as a narrative.
