The “Lucie Rie Exhibition: Elegant Vessels Connecting East and West” will be held at the National Crafts Museum (Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture) from Tuesday, September 9th to Monday, November 24th (public holiday). Lucie Rie, a leading British ceramic artist of the 20th century, has continued to grow in popularity since her full introduction at a solo exhibition at the Sogetsu Kaikan in 1989. The early 20th century, when she absorbed the essence of art, coincided with a period of growing interest in Oriental ceramics in Europe. This exhibition explores the source of the graceful yet central form of her work, examining what she learned and accepted in her mixed East and West background, as well as the people, objects, and places she encountered, including Josef Hoffmann, Bernard Leach, and Hans Koper. This is Lee’s first major retrospective in Japan in 10 years, since her 2015 exhibition. Exhibition view

In Vienna in the early 20th century, when Lucy began her career, not only pure art was being produced, but also the artists of the Wiener Werkstätte, who expressed a high aesthetic sense through everyday objects. This chapter introduces Lucy’s early works, which were created by absorbing the atmosphere of the times, as well as artists active in the era, including Josef Hoffmann, one of the founders of the Wiener
Werkstätte. Chapter 2: Encounters in London In 1938, Lucy travels to London to escape Nazi persecution, meeting new people in a new environment. For example, there is Bernard Leach, who played a central role in the British pottery world, and Hans Coper, a young man with the ambition of becoming a sculptor who had just begun to study pottery and joined the workshop to make buttons. In this chapter, we will introduce not only the works Lucy produced during her time in London, but also the works of these artists who had a significant influence on her after she moved to the UK. Chapter 3: Encounter with the Orient When Lucy arrived in England, the potters at Studio Pottery, led by Bernard Leach, were looking to Oriental ceramics for inspiration. He also deepened his friendship with Hamada Shoji and others at the Dartington International Crafts Conference in 1952, with whom he later held solo exhibitions. This chapter introduces his connection with the East, along with the works of Leach and Hamada. Chapter 4: Developing Her Own Style—Ceramic Artist Lucie Rie This chapter introduces pots and vases created after 1970. The style we recognize today as her signature, with its small foot, clean lines, manganese glaze, and scraped-off details, was established around this time. You will be able to see sophisticated pieces in which the glaze, form, and decoration come together. ■ Also check out the extensive lineup of original exhibition merchandise Original Lucie Rie Exhibition merchandise will be on sale at the museum shop during the exhibition. In addition to the official catalog, we have a full lineup of candy pouches, acrylic charms, clear files, and more!
