He majored in Western painting and contemporary art and began working as an artist in college. After focusing on family life, he gained experience working in a Kyo-Yuzen workshop and a jewelry manufacturer before going independent and exploring new possibilities in traditional crafts. In 2016, his interest in traditional crafts led him to found wayuplus . With a background in preserving the
traditional techniques of cloisonné, we create pieces that each tell a story and focus on combining traditional Japanese beauty with modern sensibilities. We create elegant and understated pieces such as Kyoto cloisonné jewelry and obidome (sash clips) that exude refinement and sophistication. We pursue the possibilities of new cloisonné designs and techniques, exploring new possibilities for cloisonné that blend naturally into modern lifestyles. What is Cloisonné?

It is a traditional craft widely known around the world. It originated in Egypt and was introduced to Japan via the Silk Road. While there are various theories, the oldest example in Japan is said to be a tortoise-shell-shaped decorative metal piece from the Korean peninsula excavated from the Kengyokozuka Tomb in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture. Additionally, a jeweled mirror decorated with cloisonné ware has been found among the Shosoin treasures from the Nara period. Later, records of the use of cloisonné ware remained during the Muromachi period, and cloisonné ware made in Kyoto during the Momoyama period still remains in temples and mansions within the city. Furthermore, during the Meiji period, cloisonné ware, along with other Japanese crafts, was highly acclaimed and developed into a traditional industry, creating a worldwide Japonism craze. The seven treasures mentioned in Buddhist scriptures—gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, mantis shrimp, coral, and agate—are called Shippo. Shippo ware, a type of pottery that captivates people with its lustrous, vibrant, and beautiful brilliance that rivals even the seven treasures, is called “Shippo ware.” Furthermore, shippo ware, which has developed alongside the climate and culture of Kyoto, is known as “Kyoto Shippo.” Daimaru Elementary School

To commemorate this milestone, in March 2019, Daimaru Kyoto opened the “Daimaru Kyotokko Gakuen” for children of elementary school age and younger. With the aim of contributing to the city of Kyoto, we have opened the “Daimaru Kyotokko Gakuen” under the theme of “fun learning and fun play.” We offer a variety of classes and events, including those related to “Kyoto’s seasonal calendar” and “culture,” as well as “clothing,” “food,” “housing,” “art,” and “work experience.” We hope that these experiences will help shape the future of Kyotokkos. *Intended for children up to 12 years old.
