URL: Hida City, Gifu Prefecture Press Release: September 9, 2025 [Hida City, Gifu Prefecture] Learn about the thoughts of the people of that time through old documents! A lecture titled “Hida’s Thread-pulling Factory Girls: The Historical Position of the Factory Girls’ Union as Revealed through Official Documents” will be held on September 19th. Hida City, Gifu Prefecture, houses numerous documents and materials created from the Edo period through the Showa period. We will demonstrate the existence of these valuable materials and widely communicate their value and interest. Hida City, Gifu Prefecture (Mayor: Junya Miyatake) is home to approximately 20,000 public documents and historical materials of great historical value. However, the full extent of these documents is unknown, and the long-term maintenance of a preservation environment and measures to facilitate access to the documents are issues. Starting in fiscal year 2025, we will hold lectures and discussions with experts and city officials to determine the necessary research content and
perspectives. In addition, we plan to begin a full-scale research and organization project from fiscal year 2027 onward, which will involve further investigation to grasp the full scope of the materials and consider preservation and public disclosure.

This time, we will be holding a lecture on the theme of “Hida’s Thread-pulling Female Workers,” drawing on historical public documents. From the Meiji period through the Showa period, female thread-pulling female workers from Hida migrated to Shinshu and other areas to work, contributing to the silk industry. A union was organized locally to protect these female workers. The lecture will share what has been discovered from the documents.
