Purchase here! ​ [Background of establishment] This standard specifies the establishment of an organizational management system for artificial intelligence (AI), which is used in a wide range of fields. AI technology has rapidly developed following breakthroughs in deep learning, sparking the third AI boom. In recent years, generative AI has become widespread in society, and its applications are expanding. The use of AI in each organization’s business is inevitable, making it extremely important for organizations to establish reliable management systems for AI systems. Furthermore, the potential of AI technology is attracting significant interest not only from engineers but also from
institutional and policy makers around the world. According to an EU report, there are currently over 600 AI-related guidelines and laws. Given the proliferation of such diverse guidelines, creating standards that define standard organizational management systems for AI technology and running organizations based on those standards has become an urgent issue. In light of the high need for management system standards related to AI technology in Japan, we have now established JIS Q 42001:2025, which is aligned with the international standard ISO/IEC 42001:2023. [Standard overview] This standard specifies requirements for all organizations, regardless of their size or industry, that develop, provide, or use products or services that utilize AI (AI systems) to build and operate AI systems responsibly. Specifically, it takes into account the possibility that trust, transparency, and accountability may be required when using AI systems, stipulates requirements for avoiding risks associated with the use of AI, and requires consideration of AI fairness and individual privacy.
