Editor-in-chief’s words We have two types of “voice.” One is the social “voice” we share with others, and the other is the “voice” that resonates within our hearts. We select and discard the words (“voice”) that come to mind, and then communicate by transforming them into a form (“voice”) that can be delivered to others using text, audio, and other means. “Voice” is merely a means of transmitting “voice.” On the other hand, today we tend to place more importance on “how to express” rather than “what we think.” A quick look at bookstores and the internet reveals this, as it’s overflowing with content on the art of “communication.” The emphasis on “voice” may be a natural way to make life easier in a society where connections with others and the influence of one’s words are valued. However, as a result, aren’t we welcoming into a society that challenges our very meaning in life? * March 26, 2024. At a farewell party for the late singer Aki Yashiro, a message was read in “the singer’s own voice” synthesized by AI. Some attendees reportedly shed tears upon hearing it. The audio played there was not actually Yashiro’s, but a “voice” created by a third party via AI. However, attendees were reminded of Yashiro and were moved. We have continued to place too much emphasis on “voice.” Instead of trying to listen to the “voice,” we have come to assume what people are thinking from cleverly crafted “voices” and become satisfied with that. If you had tried to listen to the “voice” that was played at the farewell party, you would have realized that it was not Mr. Yashiro, but someone else. However, how many people would be convinced if you told a tearful mourner, “You were made to cry by someone you don’t know who made good use of Yashiro’s voice”? I’m sure that more people would rebel, saying, “Don’t think so perversely.” We live in an age where anyone can easily create their own voice using AI. The digital world, including the internet and social media, will likely become even more filled with AI-generated voices. Cases where people are emotionally moved by voices created by third parties using AI will become more commonplace. In the midst of all this, you might find yourself asking yourself, “Did this emotion come from me?” However, in a society saturated with skillful “voices” mediated by AI, finding the answer to this question can be difficult. Living in an environment where you can’t even be sure of your own emotions will eventually put your sense of purpose in life at risk. Now is the time for us to regain an attitude of facing these voices head-on. * Koe Lab “disseminates writings based on the theme of ‘voice.’ [Example of work] • A novel about a character searching for his own “voice” • An essay about the struggle with the mismatch between “voice” and “sound” • Paper studying the social role of “voice” • Interview with people whose voices sound different Explore the various words in Voice Lab and, based on the feelings you gain from them, engage in a dialogue with your own voice. Don’t just listen, but reflect and sincerely confront the various voices that flow from within you. Let’s follow that process. Dialogue with the voice should be a guide to discovering the value of the voice itself.
