The special feature is “80 Years After the War: War and Children.” 2025 marks 80 years since the end of the Asia-Pacific War in 1945 (Showa 20). Japan fought a series of wars with other countries, starting with the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894 (Meiji 27), followed by the Russo-Japanese War, the Manchurian Incident, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Asia-Pacific War. What were each of these wars like? What was life like for children during the war, and how was it affected their lives? We’ll consider what we can do to prevent war from happening again. “I Want to Know the News,” which provides easy-to-understand explanations of current events, delves into the question, “What kind of people are foreigners living in Japan?” In the July House of Councillors election, “foreigner policy” attracted particular attention. While the Japanese population is declining year by year, the number of foreigners living in Japan is increasing. What kind of people are foreigners living in Japan, and what is the background, history, and challenges of foreigner policy? Journalist Kiyoshi Isshiki explains. We’ll also cover news such as “Ichiro inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in America” and “Three consecutive years of scorching heat.” Our special interview is with Naniwa Danshi’s Ohashi Kazuya. The romantic comedy “Kimi ga Tokubetsu” has been adapted into a TV series. We interviewed Ohashi Kazuya, who plays a cheerful idol who is similar to Ohashi himself! He also answers some children’s questions! In “QuizKnock Castle: A Learning and Play Quiz,” a series of quizzes from QuizKnock, Takuya Kawamura appears! He’ll be asking questions about society. This issue focuses on Shimane Prefecture. Shimane is famous for Izumo Taisha Shrine and the World Heritage Site Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. With the “Prefecture Quiz” and “Prefecture Ranking,” you can acquire knowledge of social studies subjects like geography and history. “Historical Figures on Social Media” presents a manga that depicts what historical figures would have done on social media. This time, we’re looking at Koizumi Yakumo (Lafcadio Hearn), who wrote novels based on Japanese ghost stories like “Hoichi the Earless.” Hearn, an Irish-British man, came to Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, as an English teacher, married, became Lafcadio Hearn, and became a novelist. This program follows the life of Yakumo, who is also the inspiration for a character in the NHK morning drama “Bakeke,” which will begin airing at the end of September. The second season of the TV anime “Science x Adventure Survival!”, based on the wildly popular “Science Manga Survival” series (published by Asahi Shimbun
Publications), will begin airing on NHK Educational TV on October 4th!
