https://www.actus-interior.com/news/tecta_mit_kyoto/ “TECTA” is a rare brand that carries on the Bauhaus design philosophy through furniture to the present day. Though it only lasted 14 years (1919-1933), the German art school, Bauhaus, laid the foundations for modern
architecture and industrial design and continues to influence us today. Since its founding in 1972, TECTA has reproduced many of the Bauhaus’s most iconic pieces, including chairs by Walter Gropius, the school’s first principal; Mies van der Rohe, the school’s last principal; and Marcel Breuer, who studied at the Bauhaus and became a professor and master designer. This exhibition will feature 13 original Bauhaus furniture pieces that TECTA continues to produce today, retaining their timeless functionality for nearly 100 years, as well as the brand’s original furniture pieces designed with a modern interpretation of Bauhaus philosophy. Visitors will also be able to sit in the pieces and experience them with all five senses, learning about the path TECTA has taken. In addition, you can fully appreciate the history of TECTA’s collaboration with Jean Prouvé, a great 20th century architect and designer who was a close friend of TECTA’s founder, Chairman Axel Blochhäuser, and TECTA’s designs, which continue to inherit the DNA of Bauhaus and Prouvé. *Actus is the exclusive distributor of German company TECTA in Japan.

Fascinated by Bauhaus design, he defected to West Germany and founded the company in 1972. Along with the Bauhaus, he also held the eccentric French designer Jean Prouvé in high esteem and revered him as his mentor. Their friendship deepened when Blochäuser realized a single sketch of an easy chair that Prouvé had been unable to realize. Prouvé subsequently emerged from the Bauhaus and provided advice on strengthening the structure of TECTA’s signature cantilever chair (later patented as the Tube Aprati), as well as designing the irregularly shaped tabletop of the best-selling “M21” table. Prouvé remained an indispensable part of TECTA until his later years. This special exhibition will feature Prouvé’s sketches of the easy chair that sparked their relationship, as well as the actual D80 chair that was later commercialized. This exhibition will showcase valuable materials that trace the relationship between TECTA and Prouvé, which were not included in the “Jean Prouvé Exhibition” held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2022. *All items are not for sale.

The newly adopted base frame with slits on the sides adds a sense of lightness while maintaining the modern aesthetic of the current model. It’s truly a new evolution of a classic. The cantilever design creates a beautiful, floating appearance and a unique, comfortable seating experience with exquisite flexibility. Since TECTA introduced the B25 chair in 1976, the design of this cantilever chair has continued to evolve for nearly half a century. Designer Wolfgang Hartauer has now unveiled a new, evolved version, the B15 chair. The B15 chair has been resized to a lower height to match a variety of spaces and tables, and features an ergonomic, organic seat design for even greater comfort.
