Francis’s brother, Mark H. Baraud, had a beloved, very intelligent fox terrier named “Nipper.” After his death, Francis and his son adopted Nipper and raised him. When Francis played a recording of his brother’s voice on a phonograph he happened to have at home, Nipper listened quizzically to the horn, seemingly engrossed in the sound of his beloved master. Moved by Nipper’s behavior, Francis immediately took up his brush and painted a painting. At the time, the phonograph was a cylinder type that could record and play back, but it was later converted to a disc type. He titled the painting “His Master’s Voice.” Nipper’s sweet figure, listening longingly to his late master’s voice, so moved Berliner, the inventor of the disc phonograph, that he registered the masterpiece as a trademark in 1900.
