Shimanami Kaido (2019) The Nara Prefectural Museum of Manyo Culture is pleased to announce the special exhibition “NEW PAST: A Journey from the Asuka and Fujiwara Periods to East Asia.” Since his solo trip to India and Nepal during his second year of high school, Naoki Ishikawa (1977-) has traveled to all corners of the globe, from remote areas to urban areas, in search of new discoveries. In 2000, he participated in the Pole to Pole project, a human-powered journey from the North Pole to the Antarctic. The following year, he successfully climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents, and by 2024, he had climbed all 14 8,000-meter peaks. This exhibition will feature Ishikawa’s photographs of places associated with the “Envoys to Silla” along with their songs. We hope that by revisiting ancient sea voyages through photographs and Man’yoshu poems, you will learn about the Asuka and Fujiwara regions, which were shaken by their connections with East Asia.
