HTB nonfiction “Living to the Fullest: An Actor and His Wife’s Nocturne,” produced by HTB Hokkaido Television and broadcast on Sunday, February 2nd of this year, won the “Best” award in the Educational TV Program category at the 2025 Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association Awards. This is the first time HTB has won the “Best” award in the TV Drama category in six years, since “Stay on the Channel!” in 2019. This is the second time HTB has won the Best Educational TV Program category, following the 2003 award for the Human Vision Special “Diary in the Fog: A Message from the Aleutians.” The Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association Awards are a historic award established with the aim of improving programs, commercials, and broadcasting technology, as well as promoting the development of broadcasting activities. The awards are given once a year to programs and achievements submitted by commercial broadcasters nationwide, and honor outstanding programs and achievements that are recognized as outstanding. HTB Nonfiction’s “Living to the Fullest: A Nocturne of an Actor and His Wife” was praised as follows: “A program following the life of actor Ayumu Saito in his later years. His struggle with illness, his passion for directing plays, and the struggles of his wife, who had been fighting illness alongside him when she was forced to leave Hokkaido for a major stage performance, the camerawork and composition that followed make for a moving work.” It was awarded the prestigious “Best” award. HTB Nonfiction “Living to the Fullest: A Nocturne of an Actor and His Wife” is a documentary that closely follows the intense behind-the-scenes story of a 60-year-old actor and screenwriter who, told he only had six months to live without treatment, continues to create a new play despite suffering from cancer. It depicts the conflicts a couple faces when they are diagnosed with cancer, and when a loved one is affected by cancer. Director Numata Hiromitsu, who was in charge of coverage regarding the award, said, “I am honored to receive such a prestigious award. I would like to express my gratitude on behalf of the entire staff. I feel that this award belongs to both Saito Ayumu, who bares himself completely in front of the camera and allows us to record his journey as an actor, and his wife Nishida Kaoru, who supported Ayumu and struggled to move forward together as a couple. I am very sorry that I can no longer convey this to them in person, but the day of the award ceremony coincides with the day of Ayumu’s farewell party. I would like to inform Ayumu of the award then.” The awards ceremony will be held on Friday, November 7th, and the Grand Prix and Runner-up will be announced from the Grand Prize winners in all radio and television program categories, along with one second-place award winner.
