After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) from Chung-Ang University in South Korea, LEE has developed an expressive practice that combines the subculture and manga culture that influenced him as a child with Western art. This exhibition marks YUNSUNG LEE’s first solo exhibition in Japan. He will present a new series that combines his “Torso Series” with the panel layout techniques unique to manga, focusing on the “gaps” between frames. He will also be showcasing excerpts from his other works, including a series in which he visualizes the zodiac signs as SD characters, and a series in which he reinterprets the myth of Laocoon in manga style. One is a series of eight zines and paintings derived from their stories. The other is a collection of paintings and objects based on natural forms like grass and stone, expressing strong emotions, including wild expressions, tears, angry faces, and even faceless forms. While the two works are not
thematically related, they were created around the same time and represent Junwoo’s current identity as an artist. Rather than conveying a single message, this exhibition offers an encounter between two worlds that have grown in different directions. Junwoo will be present on the opening day, so please take this opportunity to visit. [Opening Day Event] A silkscreen event will be held featuring two motifs from Junwoo’s illustrations. *Event details will be announced at a later date.
