What is “Kosaku Kogin”? This refers to kogin-stitched kimonos worn by farmers in Tsugaru from the late Edo period through the Meiji period. To enhance the fabric’s durability and provide warmth, the linen is sewn with cotton thread to close the weave, creating geometric patterns. The simple yet sophisticated patterns were discovered by Muneyoshi Yanagi, founder of the Mingei movement, and became known throughout Japan, starting from Aomori. They continue to fascinate people today, transcending the ages.
