Group photo of participants in the 2024 Otagei Koshien Finals Otagei is all the rage right now. Images of glow sticks (penlights) and sharp movements have spread across social media, evolving from cheering on audiences into a unique stage performance. While traditionally performed at cultural festivals, it has expanded to high school and university clubs and competition venues across the country, and momentum for it to become a competitive event is accelerating, especially among young people. It is amid this excitement that the finals are being held. This year’s tournament will see the addition of new divisions for U-18 (high school students and younger) and solo contestants, further expanding the scope of participants. On the day of the finals, there will be stage performances for the team and solo contestants, with enhanced video and lighting effects. Guest showcase appearances by “Starting Your Own Way of Playing,” “teamMoB,” and “JKz from CrushOn” have been confirmed. We are currently accepting interview requests and selling tickets.

Representative’s Comment Otagei is a Japanese cheering culture that transforms feelings for your favorite idols into “light” and “movement.” Last year’s inaugural event witnessed a scene of “youth itself,” as participants pushed themselves to their limits while praising each other. This year, with the addition of U-18 and solo categories, even more challenges will gather on stage. We hope that members of the media will be there to experience and record the students’ shining path and breathing. (Mantaro Kawaguchi,
