Nakanoshima, located in the center of Osaka, is an island stretching approximately 3 kilometers from east to west, sandwiched between the Dojima River and the Tosabori River. With a concentration of historical buildings, art museums, libraries, parks, and more, it is a treasure trove of world-class cultural assets and a symbol of Osaka, the water city. At the beginning of the Edo period in 1603, Yodoya Tsuneyasu built a bridge over the Tosabori River at his own expense to access Nakanoshima, and the area began its development as a town of storehouses. Since then, Nakanoshima has continued to develop, and a variety of developments are currently underway to enhance its international competitiveness. Communicating to the world the charm and creativity of Nakanoshima, where history, the environment, cultural assets, people, and things come together, will enhance the brand value of Osaka and the Kansai region. To achieve this, it is essential that industry, government, academia, and citizens engage in dialogue across boundaries and share visions and actions for the future society. With the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo as an opportunity, “All of Nakanoshima” will come together and express its strong feelings to the world in the form of the “Nakanoshima Declaration.” The main concept is “building bridges,” which has been key to Nakanoshima’s development. As Nakanoshima is made up of six “cho” characters, we are issuing this declaration from Nakanoshima to the world in order to build six bridges and connect creative development to the future. We therefore ask that you actively spread the word about this event and consider covering it and attending on the day. Nakanoshima, home to a diverse collection of cultural facilities and historical buildings, is the symbolic island of Osaka’s “Water City,” the host city of the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025. The Nakanoshima Pavilion Festival 2025 is a project to establish the Nakanoshima brand worldwide by treating existing world-class cultural facilities as pavilions, integrating them with the park’s waterfront and public open spaces, and
concentrating co-created content undertaken by all of Nakanoshima. It will create and disseminate opportunities to experience the charms of Nakanoshima all at once.
