KURA is pleased to present GHOSTCHARCOALS’ first solo exhibition, starting on October 18th. Having gained phenomenal popularity on social media, this time the artist hopes to invite viewers to experience the delicate details of his work in person. He will transcend the distance of a screen and create a space where viewers and the work can meet face-to-face. CRUMBLE is an attempt to examine the power hidden within fragility. This stillness gently draws the viewer into the work. This exhibition juxtaposes the transience of charcoal dust with the image of a person who resists the passage of time through relentless practice, still striving to achieve something. GHOSTCHARCOALS’ portraits capture a raw sense of presence and a sense of engagement on paper. Each drawing is done in a single session, and the artist’s emotional turmoil and urgency are evident in the lines. The movement of the brush sometimes produces works that appear “unfinished.” However, it is from this anxiety and unrest that new strength emerges. Artist Profile GHOSTCHARCOALS is an art project by Brazilian creative director Rodrigo Marineiro. He has been based in Tokyo since 2020. For over 20 years, he has collaborated with numerous global brands, including Adidas, Nike, Nissan, Nespresso, Visa, Mastercard, GoDaddy, Porsche, Bazooka Candy, and Sony PlayStation, and has spent his days surrounded by screens. However, this time, rather than continuing on that path, he deliberately went in the opposite direction. He chose charcoal. Through the direct interaction between his blackened fingertips and the paper, he discovered new
possibilities for expression. Stepping away from the digital world, using his hands, and facing the materials. This simple act is the starting point for him to create GHOSTCHARCOALS.
