NTLive “Inter Alien” This film centers on Jessica, a woman who works as a judge while also raising her child. It’s a human drama that follows Jessica, who faces the daily high-wire act that many women face as they strive to balance motherhood and work. However, a certain incident forces her into a difficult situation where she fears she might lose the balance she’s managed to achieve up until then. In the teaser trailer, the tension of the film is expressed through the drumming of Jasper Talbot, who plays her son. From Author Susie Miller — On Being a Judge (Excerpt from the Inter Alien Home Program) From the Latin word inter Alia means “among other things,” a legal term. But here, it symbolizes how working women juggle their daily lives. Women put in extraordinary efforts at work, but they do so while juggling “other things”—coordinating family life, shouldering emotional burdens, managing household chores, and preparing for emergencies. One woman told me, “I live my life in the gaps between other people’s lives.” While working, she also handles school clothes, packing lunches, preparing meals, driving kids to and from school, and even dealing with contractors who come to her house. Women constantly navigate the invisible boundaries between being a mother, a wife, a professional, and a member of society. These overlapping and conflicting
expectations can be challenging at best and often overwhelming. Women also face another layer: societal judgment of women who “try to do it all.” Jessica in the book is both the “judge” and the “evaluated.” She is judged on everything—as a mother, her choices, her hours, her femininity, her feminism, her partner.
