It was created in 2000 by Takayama-based plasterer Hasado Shuhei. Connecting the woodworking culture of “Hida Craftsmen” to the future In keeping with the history of this region, long known for its “Hida Craftsmen*,” the new Yubokukan will serve as a place to connect Japan’s outstanding woodworking culture to the future. The facility offers suggestions for a rich lifestyle that incorporates the warmth of wood and handcrafted craftsmanship, and works to preserve woodworking culture and techniques. Architect/Designer Architect Yoshifumi Nakamura and furniture designer Makoto Koizumi were responsible for the space design for the renovation. The interior of the building is furnished using a wide variety of wood, including cedar and oak from Hida, and artisanal techniques are scattered throughout. In addition, the art direction was handled by graphic designer Daigo Daikoku, who also designed the logos for “Yubokukan HIDA GALLERY” and “CAFE & TABLE 工”.

Through special exhibitions held several times a year, we provide creators with new creative opportunities and explore the potential of wood and handcrafts in our future lives. Grand Opening Commemorative Exhibition Three Materials: Iron, Glass, Wood—Shapes of Coexistence To
commemorate the grand opening, we will be holding a special exhibition supervised by Ryuji Mitani, “Three Materials: Iron, Glass, Wood—Shapes of Coexistence.” This unique exhibition features three artists who literally work with different materials: Ryuji Mitani, who specializes in wood; Masaki Kanamori, who specializes in iron; and Masao Kosumi, who specializes in glass. These three artists collaborate to create several products. These three artists, all different ages and genres, came together and shared their deep trust in each other’s work, resulting in a single piece that could be described as a quiet proposal for the future of manufacturing. A visual book created in conjunction with this exhibition will also be on sale at the venue. Please enjoy it along with the exhibit.
