Press release: October 3, 2025 To Members of the Press [Event News] The large-scale global traveling exhibition that created a buzz at the Arles International Photography Festival will expand and arrive in Japan in the summer of 2026! “The Miracle of the Gaze: The Adventures of Japanese Female Photographers” This exhibition, bringing together approximately 30 female photographers who have played important roles not only in the history of Japanese photography but also in art history, is finally making a triumphant return!

Until now, however, the photographers represented have tended to be male. This exhibition, by highlighting female photographers, offers a valuable opportunity to trace Japanese photography from a new angle and broaden its scope, reexamining its history. This exhibition brings together approximately 30 female photographers who have played important roles not only in the history of Japanese photography but also in art history, from the 1950s to the present day. The exhibition will begin at the Arles International Photography Festival in the summer of 2024 and travel around the world to coincide with the publication of a large-scale book exploring the same theme, “I’m So Happy You Are Here” (440 pages, English and French versions). Both works have been highly acclaimed. This exhibition goes beyond the narrow definition of “photography” to present highly creative works employing a variety of approaches, including installation, collage, and video. Marking his triumphant return, this exhibition delves even deeper, showcasing approximately 200 works. The exhibition also focuses on print culture, a uniquely developed medium of expression in the Japanese photography world, which is rarely seen anywhere else in the world, and is accompanied by numerous documents. The themes that each work deals with are diverse, including memory, the body, everyday life, and gender, and we are sure that a wide range of audience members, including those with a strong interest in photography, will discover the diversity of photographic expression and be led into various dialogues.
