With approximately 160 members, the orchestra functions as both a symphony orchestra and a theater orchestra. Its Honorary Music Director is Myung-Whun Chung, its Principal Conductor is Andrea Battistoni, its Conductors Laureate are Tadaaki Otaka, Kazushi Ono, and Dan Ettinger, its Special Guest Conductor is Mikhail Pletnev, and its Associate Conductor is Min Chung. In addition to regular concerts at Bunkamura Orchard Hall, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, and Suntory Hall, as well as independent performances to popularize classical music, such as the “Shibuya/Weekday/Weekend Afternoon Concerts,” “Heartful Concert,” “New Year’s Concert,” and “Special Ninth Symphony Concert,” the orchestra also performs opera and ballet as a regular orchestra at the New National Theater, and has appeared on broadcasts such as the “NHK New Year’s Opera Concert,” “Bravo! Orchestra,” “Masterpiece Album,” “Classic TV,” “Untitled Concert,” “Tokyu New Year’s Eve Concert,” and “NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen.” The orchestra is beloved by music fans nationwide for its high-level performances and various educational activities. Their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21 were featured in documentaries such as MBS’s “Jonetsu Tairiku” and NHK BS1’s “BS1 Special: We Will Surely Rise Again – The Soul Orchestra’s One and a Half Year Struggle.” The band has also actively performed overseas, with three European tours, a world tour commemorating their 100th anniversary, and numerous concerts in Asia, including a concert in Japan, China, and South Korea in 2005 and a concert in Tokyo and Seoul in 2015 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea. In December 2015, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea, the orchestra performed the “Japan-Korea Friendship ‘Joyful Ninth'” concert in Seoul and Tokyo under the baton of Chung Myung-Whun. In December 2017, the orchestra held a concert in Shanghai to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China. In May 2024, the orchestra will tour three cities in South Korea with four performances under the baton of Chung Myung-Whun. In March 2025, the orchestra will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea with a joint performance with the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo and Seoul, attracting attention both domestically and internationally. In recent years, the orchestra has been receiving high praise and attention from an even wider range of regions, including invitations from Europe and the Middle East. In October-November 2025, the orchestra will embark on a European tour with Honorary Music Director Chung Myung-Whun, visiting eight cities in seven countries. Since 1989, the company has held a franchise agreement with Bunkamura Orchard Hall. It has business partnerships with Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo; Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture; Karuizawa Town, Nagano Prefecture; and Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, as well as a partnership agreement with Kariya City, Aichi Prefecture, promoting educational and creative cultural exchange with each region. It has received the 1987 Arts Festival Award, the 1995 Arts Festival Grand Prize, and the 2004 Arts Festival Excellence Award. The live CD “Miyoshi Akira’s Music” (Camerata Tokyo, October 2008), featuring three performances of the Miyoshi Akira Orchestral Works Series “Music’s Future Heritage,” also won the 2008 Arts Festival Excellence Award. Other awards he has received include the 8th Ongakunotomosha Award and the 8th Yutorisuto Award (Ajinomoto Co., Ltd.) in 1984, the Music Pen Club Award (Classical Category/Japanese Artist) in 2001, the Symphony Category (20th-21st Century) of the 2021 “OPUS KLASSIK 2021” (Conductor: Andrea Battistoni), and the Encouragement Award of the 20th Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Music Award in 2022 (Conductor: Chung Myung-Whun/Concert performance of Verdi’s opera “Falstaff” at the regular concert in October 2022). In 2025, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its 114th anniversary as Japan’s first symphony orchestra. With about 160 musicians, Tokyo Phil regulary performs both symphonies and operas.
