“smartphone-related habits.” Another 20% answered “eating and drinking habits.” Additionally, the most common smartphone habit that people can’t stop was “I can’t help but look at it in my spare time or before going to bed.” Three editors from ESSE’s reader representative organization, the “ESSE Friends Editors” (22 people in total), will use their own experience and knowledge to solve your worries! Approximately 3% Top 2 Concerns of People Who Find It Difficult to Put Themselves First – I waste time looking at my smartphone carelessly in my spare time: 31.2% – I want to stop looking at my smartphone before bed, but I can’t help it: 26.6% According to the survey results, among the “habits you want to quit but can’t,” 50% of readers were troubled by their “smartphone usage habits.” The most common habit was “wasting time by lazily looking at my smartphone in my spare time,” followed by “I want to stop looking at my smartphone before bed, but I can’t help it.” Three “ESSE Friends Editors” shared some interesting opinions on this issue. ●Comment from Toshiko Nagura, a life organizer and mother of two children

It’s also interesting that, as a professional organizer, my inability to organize and throw things away also made it onto the list. I particularly struggled to break my habit of watching videos on social media for long periods of time. Now, I accept that this is the time I need to relieve stress, and I set goals for myself, like finishing by a certain time. As for using your smartphone before bed, I feel that not bringing it into the bedroom and turning off notifications is effective in reducing ‘wasting smartphone time.’ ●Comment from Sakura, a Level 2 Financial Planner and Mother of Two

I also waste time idly staring at my smartphone. I regret it and wish I could use this time for something more meaningful, but I can’t stop. I also had a hard time breaking my habit of staying up late. I often used my smartphone before bed. Now, I try to turn off the lights in my room and go to bed early. I also always have my smartphone glued to my hand when I have free time. I try to avoid touching it as much as possible when I’m with other people.” ●Comment from Azusa Misonoo, a residential designer and mother of three children

Especially when I’m busy at work, I tend to indulge in bad habits. I love fashion, so I used to shop online to relieve stress. However, when I realized my closet was filled with clothes that didn’t excite me, I quit this habit. I think it’s common to think you’ll just spend a little bit of time on social media, but before you know it, time has flown by! I recommend using your smartphone’s Screen Time feature to limit the amount of time you spend on social media apps. You’ll naturally spend less time on your phone and feel refreshed. All three ESSE Friends editors sympathized with the reader’s complaint that they “find themselves lazily checking their smartphones in their spare time or before going to bed.” They then shared their own unique solutions to the problem, such as “not bringing smartphones into the bedroom” and “trying to limit the amount of time spent on social media apps,” as ways to “keep your distance from your smartphone.” ●What is an “ESSE Friends Editor”?
