Kaiseki cuisine was born from the tea ceremony, which flourished during the reign of Shōjō, and, together with the development of tableware, fostered aesthetic sense and a spirit of hospitality.

All works are from the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art. The Spirit of Hospitality and the “Shokado Bento” This exhibition explores the art of Shōjō, focusing on art related to the tea ceremony and on the Kaga domain, a major cultural sphere that absorbed Kyoto culture and fostered its own unique cultural arts around the beginning of the Edo period. The relationship between Shōkadō Shōjō and the Kaga domain is generally not well known. This time, we have exhibited art and crafts from Ishikawa Prefecture, showcasing the connection between Yawata, Kyoto, and Ishikawa.

While conveniently portable, the “Shokado bento” is also a symbol of hospitality, embodying the spirit of kaiseki cuisine. In addition to exhibiting the bento, we will also be holding related events, such as a “Shokado bento” plating experience.
