Three years later, he moved to Fukushima and, as a resident, became aware of new injustices. Fukushima was not only physically divided, but also emotionally. Boundaries were drawn in evacuation zones, and lines of demarcation emerged between friends based on differences in status. Even those who appeared to be living “normal” lives were constantly haunted by anxiety and conflict. This was the greatest damage. Fourteen years have passed since the accident, but the absurdity continues and becomes increasingly difficult to see. The artist feels that this is not just true in Fukushima, but throughout the world. Relationships with the land and with others cannot be repaired, emotional wounds will never heal, and the truth seems shrouded in mist. The artist feels that we will never know what is right. Yet the only certain truth remains: that they, and we like them, simply continue to live in this world. “Blue Persimmons” is an attempt to visually express the relationship between the divided land and people of Fukushima through landscapes and portraits, visualizing the invisible radiation and the invisible damage in Fukushima. (Color, approximately 50 pieces) Scenes from the daily lives of the people who live in this town remain imprinted on the weathered signs of long-established businesses, regardless of the generation or form.
