Mr. Matsuoka was born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, in 1978. He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, majoring in Japanese painting, in 2005, and completed his doctoral studies in Japanese painting at the same university’s Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2010. While still a student, he was first selected for the 62nd Spring Inten Exhibition and the 92nd Revitalized Inten Exhibition. Since then, he has continued to actively hold solo exhibitions and participate in group exhibitions, while also receiving numerous awards and garnering attention as one of the leading artists in the world of Japanese painting. In his early career as an artist, he painted realistic portraits and mystical landscapes. Shortly after, he had the opportunity to paint giant salamanders, and now he paints amphibians, animals, and sea creatures, serenely posing amidst gentle colors. The creatures he depicts exude a charming presence, and the artist’s various “feelings” are imbued in his works, eloquently conveying them within their tranquil settings. In recent years, he has also been creating works that boldly divide the canvas with cocktail glasses amid the modern landscape of a counter bar. Using mineral pigments and gold dust, he skillfully captures the vivid color and aroma of alcohol poured into a glass. This exhibition will showcase Ayumu Matsuoka’s current work through approximately 30 pieces, ranging from six-panel folding screens to smaller pieces.
