[Nara Prefecture] 2025 Tenri City Co-hosted Exhibition “Exploring the Ancient Tombs of the Hozumi Region: The Ancient Tombs in the Central Nara Basin” ​ Nara prefecture Press Release: October 6, 2025 To Members of the Media 2025 Tenri City Co-hosted Exhibition “Exploring the Ancient Tombs of the “Hozumi” Region: The Group of Ancient Tombs in the Central Nara Basin” will be held. The Hozumi clan is an ancient clan said to share the same ancestry as the Mononobe clan. They played an active role at the center of royal authority in the 6th century and held an important position in diplomacy with Baekje on the Korean Peninsula. Their base is believed to have been near Maesaicho, Tenri City, but the area around Hozu in Tawaramoto Town has also been considered a possible location. Medium-sized chieftain tombs from the late Kofun period are scattered around the two areas, and numerous figurative haniwa (clay figures) have been excavated. Settlement ruins are also known, where many artifacts of immigrant origin have been excavated. We will explore the “Hozumi” region based on the results of previous surveys.
