YOASOBI’s music video for “Gekijo,” the theme song for the Wednesday 10pm drama “If This World Were a Stage, Where Would the Dressing Room Be?”, currently airing on Fuji TV, will premiere on YouTube at 11:15 PM on Wednesday, October 8th, immediately after the second episode airs. The new Wednesday 10pm drama “If This World Were a Stage, Where Would the Dressing Room Be?” will premiere on Wednesday, October 1st. This youth drama is set in Shibuya in 1984 and features a completely original story with semi-autobiographical elements, written by screenwriter Koki Mitani. The theme song, “Gekijo,” was created based on the short story “Theater Story,” written specifically for the song by Koki Mitani. The song, which takes a serious approach to the drama and is woven around the theme that “the world is a stage, and all humans are actors,” is a double-vocal song, a first for YOASOBI, featuring vocals by composer Ayase. The music video for “Gekijou,” a new venture for YOASOBI, will feature live-action footage featuring the cast members themselves, a first for YOASOBI. Furthermore, the video is expected to be a spectacular one, featuring appearances by cast members Masaki Suda and Fumi Nikaido from the drama. The video was directed by Pennacky, an up-and-coming filmmaker who has worked on music videos for numerous artists both in Japan and abroad. https://youtube.com/shorts/tUdylMuh9vE?feature=share ■YOASOBI Comment This song is my own response to a line from Shakespeare’s play: “All the world’s a stage, and every man a part in play.” After numerous meetings with director Pennacky, we aimed for a visual expression that intuitively conveys the idea that each character is the star of their own stage production, including a meta-structure like actors filming other actors and a cameraman filming them. We, YOASOBI, played the role of “YOASOBI,” living as musicians, while Suda played the role of actor “Masaki Suda,” and Nikaido played the role of actor “Fumi Nikaido.” I believe we were able to express the worldview of this song in a unique and cynical way. This is YOASOBI’s first live-action music video featuring the members themselves, and with the help of many people, we believe it turned out amazingly well. I hope that the feelings I put into this song will reach those who watch the drama and everyone who always supports YOASOBI through the music video. ■Comment from Masaki Suda I was surprised when the theme song was decided, surprised when I heard it would be the first live-action music video, and even more surprised that I’ll be involved.
