Experienced in a variety of occupations 2011: Studied pottery in Tajimi and Seto, and currently works as a potter in Wakayama Glass Artist | Tsuyoshi Tsujino’s Message for this Exhibition I first met Matsumoto when his pottery skills were recognized and he exhibited at the craft fair “Tomoshibito no Gathering” that I was hosting. The works I saw at the time were mainly tableware for everyday use. They didn’t loudly assert a strong individuality, but I remember them as “usable tableware” that quietly exuded uniqueness. Ten years later, I encountered her work again in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, where we live together. The clay and glaze were probably unchanged, but the pieces stood there, imbued with a completely different meaning than before. Evolution or degeneration? I was deeply struck by the forms, which seemed to wriggle between the inorganic and organic, constantly changing. These works are man-made, yet exist as if they were not. There is a real sense of a deep and distant confrontation between the artist and the material. I hope you will take the time to see them for yourself.
