It is registered as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and also as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Amidst streets still reminiscent of the Edo period, gorgeous floats are pulled around, accompanied by the resounding Sawara Bayashi music of the Performing Arts Association, creating a truly powerful and elegant sight. A highlight of the festival is the spectacular “No No Ji Mawashi,” in which the floats spin in the shape of the Japanese character “no.” Every time the floats, weighing 3-4 tons and reaching heights of up to 7 meters, spin with vigor, the spectators erupt in cheers. The Sawara Grand Festival, which attracts many visitors every year, remains a source of pride for the region. This year marks the once-every-three-year “yearly handover” year, and on the 11th (Sat), all 14 floats gathered together, creating a spectacular sight across the town of Katori.
