“The Last Kowloon Walled City COMPLETE” EDITION” on sale October 16, 2025 Kowloon Walled City was a high-rise, high-density slum that once existed in Hong Kong and is said to have housed 50,000 people at its peak. Although it was demolished between 1993 and 1994, it has been used as a motif for various creative works, including movies and games, and its chaotic charm continues to attract many people. This book is a collection of photographs taken by the author, who was fascinated by Kowloon Walled City, in the days before it was scheduled for demolition. The book includes never-before-seen cuts that were not included in Nakamura Shintaro’s previous book, “The Final Kowloon Walled City: Complete Collector’s Edition” (published in 2009, by Nakamura Shintaro, published by Goma Books), which is now difficult to obtain, as well as new columns about Kowloon Walled City written by authors including Akiko Kurata, who is also known for translating “The History of Kowloon Walled City” (published in 2022, by Lu Jin, published by Misuzu Shobo). As a bonus, the book also includes a QR code that allows you to watch footage of the inside of Kowloon Walled City taken by Nakamura.

Graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Science. For his graduation research, he was a member of the slum research team of the Urban Planning Laboratory and conducted field surveys of Kowloon Walled City. Since 1993, he has worked in the architecture industry while also working as a photographer. His major works include the photo collections “The Last Days of Kowloon Walled City”
(1996/Shinpusha) and “Tales of the Hutongs” (2008/Archives
Publishing).
