Press release: October 16, 2025 To Members of the Press A string of rare stories about 80s idols & thunderous cheers for their hit songs! “Showa 100 Years: Time Travel Concert – 80’s Idols Exploring the Past through Song and Talk” Held On Monday, October 13th (national holiday), we held the “Showa 100 Years: Time Travel Concert – 80’s Idols Exploring the Past through Song and Talk” at Tachikawa Stage Garden in Tokyo.

Yamada also said to Yamaguchi, “You’re the same age as Sanma (Akashiya) and the others, right? 70 years old,” which elicited celebratory applause from the entire venue. Kashiwabara requested Nishiyama, “That was my favorite,” to which Nishiyama responded with a joke, “Miracle Ray!” As the nostalgic conversation got everyone excited, Yamada excitedly called out to his guests, “We’re sticking to the Showa era today! Please talk candidly,” and the concert began.

Let’s go!” Yamada yelled, bringing on the stage the opening act, Yoshimi Iwasaki. Amidst thunderous applause, she passionately sang the anime song “Touch,” beloved by all generations. Yamada exclaimed in admiration, “She has such a transcendent quality. I can’t believe it’s been over 40 years.” During the talk, Iwasaki began sharing precious memories of her student days, including “Seiko Matsuda and (Toshihiko) Tahara,” to which Yamada remarked, impressed by the realistic nuance, “The way you call her ‘Tahara’ is amazing!” Yamada and Iwasaki also performed a duet of “Curious George,” the theme song for the NHK Educational TV anime, which got the audience dancing along and livening up the atmosphere.

Yamada came out holding a nostalgic anime merchandise, a “magic wand,” and asked, “Can I ask you a favor?” The audience erupted in delighted applause when Ota yelled, “Pimple pimple pum pop’n, pimple pum pum pop’n!”

Yamaguchi’s second song was her solo song “Mama no Mise wa Ima Nai” (Mama’s Shop Isn’t Here Now), and Nagae and Nishiyama teased Yamaguchi to the point of laughter, as the three of them had a comedy-like exchange that had the audience in stitches. They neatly concluded their talk with
punchlines: “We’ll keep doing this as long as Yamaguchi-san is alive,” and “At most another 30 years,” before handing the baton over to Yamada for his segment.

She thrilled the audience with a bit of bus guide humor from her days, then enthusiastically captivated them with a talk filled with keywords pinpointed to the Showa generation. Toward the end, she said, “It’ll be more energizing if you shout, so please sing along if you can,” concluding with a call-and-response of “Yamada?” “Kuniko!” and a superb showmanship of an imitation of a Showa-era celebrity.

Minayo Watanabe, who was hugely popular as member number 29 of the all-time idol group Onyanko Club, captivated the audience with a medley of “Otome no Kokoro no Jiyuugata,” “Osaki ni Shitsurui,” “Koi wa Kuesu-chon,” and “Maaka na Jitensha Medley.” Yamada appeared on stage and danced along with Onyanko Club’s first single, “Sailor Fuku wo Nugasanai de.” The audience also stood up and danced along, and both were thrilled, saying, “Everyone remembers this, don’t they? (laughs).”
